Let’s get into the ins and outs of each transportation option.

By Plane

The first might sound obvious, but if traveling internationally, you’ll most likely be flying into the country. Typically, the cheaper option is to fly into the Madrid Airport (Adolfo Suárez Madird-Barajas Airport) and find transportation afterward. However, there is also a Salamanca Airport (Matacán Airport) 15km (9.3 miles) from the city center.

One of the best public transportation options in Salamanca, Spain is by far the bus system

By Bus

The public buses are one of the best forms of transportation in Spain. If you are taking a bus from the Madrid airport, take the Avanza Bus. It provides a direct route from the airport to Salamanca. The bus stop is at Terminal One, and you can buy tickets online, at the ticket booth, at Viajes de El Corte Íngles travel agency inside the airport, or by calling +34 902 02 09 99.

If you’re looking to spend time in Madrid before arriving in Salamanca, head to the Madrid Bus Station at Compañía Avanza Bus, C/ Méndez Álvaro to book tickets to Salamanca at a later date. For additional travel information, call the Madrid Tourist line at +34 91 588 1636.

By Train

One of my favorite ways to travel around Spain is their trains. You can take the Spanish National Airways train company RENFE from the Madrid airport to Salamanca. To get to the train station (Madrid Chamartín Railway Station) from the Madrid airport, take the underground line 8 to Nuevos Ministerios, then line 10.

RENFE offers train rides across Spain and Portugal, so it’s a great way to take day trips from Salamanca. Usually, there will be multiple trains going daily, and the company will sometimes offer a fast train. Ticket prices are affordable, convenient, quick, and a beautiful way to travel from city to city.

By Rental Car

Another option for exploring Spain and getting to Salamanca is booking a rental car. A rental car provides greater flexibility and freedom to travel wherever and whenever you want during your trip. However, the downside is that it usually costs more money over the long term. A rental car is ideal if you’re comfortable driving in a different country.

Some of the rental car companies in Spain include Alamo, Hertz, Dollar Car Rental, Europcar, and more. To get to Salamanca, the A-66 and A-62 will take you straight into the city. If you’re traveling from Madrid, you’ll take the A-50.

Taxis are one of the main methods of transportation you can take in Salamanca Spain

By Taxi

Lastly, you can always opt for a taxi ride anywhere around Spain. The only downside is that if you’re going far, this usually racks up a bill. If you’re coming from Madrid, a few taxi companies include Radio Taxi Madrid, Radio Taxi Independiente, and Tele Taxi. All taxis accept credit card payments and cash. How To Get Around Salamanca, Spain

Now that you know how to get to Salamanca, let’s talk about how you can travel throughout the city! Salamanca is a smaller city in Spain, so chances are you won’t need to navigate around much, especially if you are staying in a Salamanca hotel near the city center. However, it’s good knowledge if you want to venture out or don’t want to walk. Let’s dive in!

Walking is one of the best forms of transportation in Salamanca Spain! We highly recommend it for those who are physically able to.

On Foot

Salamanca is a walkable city, and walking is the easiest option. You can walk from one side to the other in about thirty minutes. I say this because I’ve done it myself! It’s a bit challenging to find parking in Salamanca. If possible, I’d recommend walking places. It’s also very accessible, so if you’re traveling with someone in a wheelchair or are in one yourself, there’s a high probability you can access most attractions.

Alsa Bus

By Bus

The next most popular public transportation option is taking a public bus. There are various bus routes throughout the city, most beginning a little after 7 AM and ending before 11 PM. Hours differ on Saturdays and Holidays. Buses run frequently, running anywhere between 10 and 30 minutes each route. You can find specific routes and times here.

There are a few different bus ticket options. The daily tickets are 1,10€ no matter what time or route, and you can buy them on the bus. You can also purchase a bus card (bono-bus) that costs 2€ and is reloadable. You can buy a city bus card for unlimited rides per one, three, six, or twelve months. There are reduced prices for handicapped and for people under the age of 30.

You can also find buses to different cities at the Salamanca Bus Terminal (Avenida Filiberto Villalobos 71, 37007 Salamanca). Popular bus companies include Alsa, FlixBus, Avanza, BlaBlaCarBus, and Gipsyy. You can get to popular destinations, domestic cities, and international cities.

Roundabout in Madrid

By Rental Car

While you can book a rental car to navigate the city, I’d advise against it. As I mentioned previously, it’s challenging to find parking in Salamanca, so the best bet is to take the bus or walk. However, if you do rent a car, make sure you contact your hotel and make sure they have parking options available!

By Taxi

There are a few private taxi companies in Salamanca, but Radio Taxi Salamanca and Radio Tele-Taxi Salamanca are the most popular. Both companies run 24 hours a day, and you can find them pretty much anywhere while you’re out on the town. Prices start anywhere from 1,90€ to 5€ depending on the distance, day, and time.
